Molly - The Internet is a Place
I am trying to be cognizant of the personal/peripheral/whatever you want to call it internet becoming another distraction. Even if it requires a lot more deliberation than algorithmic and infinite scrolls, at some point you're still just opening tabs and looking at things, thinking "this seems cool" without doing anything. You have to eat a fig eventually.
Like many if not most people interested in smaller internet I got to have part of my childhood without any internet at all. You'll have to trust me that I said "the computer used to be a physical destination" to Paul independently of a bunch of people making the same observation. But it's true. For the first half of my life it was not central to my daily existence. It was one of many things I liked to do and what I did get into online was very complimentary to my embodied life. I really worry that giving that experience to my child is going to be a constant uphill battle.
I also recognize that my relationship to the internet is very different from people of my demographic who were more online/early adopters. But even for them, I think it was much easier to have online life not be totally severed from the physical.
In my hunt for Websites, here's something I liked
Watching: White Lotus season 3
I've been fascinated by a few critics I like responding positively to this season despite not liking the first two. It seems more sinister this time around, but like the whole "if the end of a procedure was painful you'll remember it as painful but if it wasn't you'll remember it as ok" phenomenon I think the Sicily season turned out a lot less sinister than it appeared at first! I remember Vulture recappers really thinking Lucia the fun sex worker was going to be the dead body! Anyway, I liked season 1 but didn't love it, loved season 2, and am enjoying the ride in Thailand for now.
